Product description

Landon’s second film as director, THE CHASER (1928) is a dark, slightly kinky comedy in which a carousing Harry is ordered by a judge to swap domestic duties (and clothing) with his wife. Deprived of his manliness, Harry contemplates suicide while coping with flirtatious salesmen and the scorn of a former comrade.

Cast of characters in The Chaser

  • Harry Langdon (The Big Flash) … Harry. The “unfaithful” husband, who frankly did nothing wrong. And he’s easily pushed around.
  • Gladys McConnell … Harry’s Wife. She loves Harry, but is easily led by her mother.
  • Helen Hayward (Show Boat 1936; The Gold Rush) … The Wife’s Mother. Who doesn’t like Harry, thinks that he’s not good enough for her little girl, and wants to pull them apart.
  • Bud Jamison (Three Little Beers) … Harry’s Buddy (as William Jaimison). Who leads into the funniest part of the movie, where he takes his oppressed pal to a golf outing. What could possibly go wrong?
  • Charles Thurston … The Judge
  • Frank Brownlee … Amorous Repo Man (uncredited)

Trivia

  • In an interview ten years after this film was released, director/star Harry Langdon referred to The Chaser and its follow-up Heart Trouble as “two of the lousiest pictures ever made.” He added that he couldn’t bring himself to attend the premiere of either film.
