Lucille Ball made several iconic appearances on I Love Lucy, and one of the most famous of those was in the episode Lucy Does a TV Commercial, which many people think of as the Vitameatavegamin episode. In a nutshell, Lucy connives her way onto a TV show that Ricky will be hosting as the lady making the commercial … Selling a health potion called vitameatavegamin, which contains vitamins, meat, vegetables and minerals—and alcohol! As Lucy does multiple practice sessions as “your Vitameatavegamin girl,” becoming more and more intoxicated with each take.(more…)

In the I Love Lucy television series, Lucille Ball wore many outrageous costumes, and not the least of them was the rumba costume (I always think of it as the Carmen Miranda dress) from the first season episode Be A Pal, where Lucy is trying to rekindle the romance in her marriage by reminding Ricky of his childhood in Cuba.(more…)

Although Lucille Ball died in 1989, this autobiography written prior to 1964 has only recently been discovered among her papers. She describes a childhood deeply affected by her father’s death and her mother’s withdrawal from her life. Raised by her grandparents, Ball craved attention and developed a tempestuous, vivacious, fiery, and yet insecure personality that would later lead her to comic stardom. It took years of working from the bottom of show business before she became a television hit, with the help of her husband, co-star, and business partner, former Cuban bandleader Desi Arnaz. Ball abandoned the book for fear of hurting Arnaz, although she gives him credit for the tremendous success she enjoyed with I Love Lucy.
