Wally Cox is an unusual people looking for work in "Lucy and the Ex-Con"

Rock Barnett: I hear this place deals with unusual jobs for unusual people.
Lucy Carter: I see. And you do unusual work?
Rock Barnett: No, I’m an unusual people.

Soft-hearted Lucy gets an ex-con (Wally Cox) a job as a security guard. But his new place of employment is robbed on his first night there! And Lucy’s blamed, since she hid his criminal background from them.

So, they go undercover at the real criminal’s hideout — in drag! Once there, they have to connive their way into the boss’ office, so the ex-con can break into his safe. But while in disguise, Rocky gets drunk on Mai Tais!

Then the drunken Rocky has to crack the safe. And steal the stolen diamonds back! So the pair hide inside the safe when the criminals come back! Thankfully, the police arrive with a search warrant, and all ends well.

  • Wally Cox (Underdog, State Fair 1962) … Rock Barnett. The ex-con, who’s grown tired of the endless cycle of crime, arrest, prison, release – and repeat. He’s legitimately wanting a fresh start. A very funny performance
  • Bruce Gordon (Tower of London) … Doc Morgan. The actual criminal. He operates a bar, as a front for his criminal activities. He’s nicknamed “Doc” since he uses a stethoscope when cracking safes.

  • Larry J. Blake (Time After Time) … Policeman

Trivia

  • Lucy’s children Kim and Craig don’t appear in the episode.
  • While in disguise, Wally Cox claims to be “of the Pasadena Perkins” which gets a laugh. It’s a reference to the Beach Boys hit song “The Little Old Lady from Pasadena” (1964)
