A draft notice for Lou C. Carmichael is delivered to Lucy Carmichael by mistake. And, until the slow-moving military bureaucracy fixes the error — she’s in the Army now!
Lucy Carmichael: Oh no! This is unbelievable!
Theodore J. Mooney: They want you to pay more income tax.
Lucy Carmichael: No. Worse than that.
Theodore J. Mooney: Nothing can be worse than paying more income tax!
Lucy Carmichael: Yes, it can. I’ve been drafted.
Lucy Carmichael: Imagine putting me in the Army.
Theodore J. Mooney: Don’t worry. You’ll never pass the physical.
Which is what any sane person would think. But, never underestimate the mindless stupidity of a bureaucracy!
Male Recruit: What are you bawlin’ about, Mac?
Lucy Carmichael: [crying] My hair! They cut off my hair!
Male Recruit: So what? They cut off mine, too and mine was longer than yours!
You’re out of the Army now …
During the entire time at boot camp, Lucy’s been making comedic mistakes, driving her poor sergeant to distraction. She’s not being mean — just being Lucy. And at the same time, Mr. Mooney’s been fighting with the bureaucracy, to get her out. So eventually …
Theodore J. Mooney: [to Lucy] Starting first thing tomorrow, you come back to work for me.
Marine Sergeant: Mr. Mooney. I want you to have this.
Theodore J. Mooney: What’s that?
Marine Sergeant: My medal for bravery. You deserve it more than I do!
And the episode ends with a funny cameo appearance:

Pvt. Gomer Pyle: I said, I’m this here Carmichael’s replacement.
Lucy Carmichael: [to Marine Sergeant] Good luck. buddy.
