The Restaurant – a restaurant patron makes the mistake of ordering the “tomato surprise”.

The Restaurant is a comedy blackout sketch for one speaking clown, and an accomplice off stage. A “blackout” is a short comedy sketch, as done in the days of vaudeville. I first saw this on The Red Skelton Hour episode, “Sheriffs are Bought, Not Made“.

Props

  • A small table, with a checkered tablecloth, supposedly a table at a restaurant.
  • A chair for the restaurant patron to sit in.
  • A menu for him to look at.
  • Tomatoes!

The Sketch

A restaurant patron is sitting at a table, looking at a menu. Eventually he puts the menu down and says, “Waiter, I’ve decided. I’ll have the tomato surprise.” At which point the off-stage accomplice pelts him with tomatoes!

Thoughts

This could easily be turned into a running gag. The patron could order a pie, or other “messy” foods that can be thrown at him.
