Lucy’s Birthday

Lucille Ball eats breakfast in bed in Lucy's Birthday - Here's Lucy season 1

Lucy’s Birthday – Here’s Lucy season 1 – originally aired November 18, 1968

On Lucy’s birthday, she oversleeps. So she comes into work very late — noontime. Her boss (and brother-in-law) uncharacteristically forgives her … And then gives her the rest of the day off! He even suggests to her children that they take their mother out to eat at a Chinese restaurant. They take Lucy there …. But don’t have the money to pay the bill! Not to worry – it’s Uncle Harry to the rescue!

Trivia

  • Alone in the office, Harry is nearly caught by his niece and nephew looking at a magazine centerfold.
  • When trying to think of a possible date for Lucy, Craig asks Kim who she [Kim] would like to date. Kim replies “I don’t think mother would be happy with Ringo Starr.” Craig then suggests Lawrence Welk.
  • Harry says that he promised to give Lucy a raise on her 40th birthday. In an earlier episode Lucy says that she’s only worked for Harry for two years. Lucy is about to try to calculate her back pay but realizes that would mean disclosing her real age. So she takes an early lunch instead.
  • Harry says he wishes his niece and nephew had been named after his grandparents: Bonnie and Clyde. Referencing the then-popular movie, Bonnie and Clyde.
  • The Chinese restaurant the kids take Lucy for her birthday dinner is called Yang Sing Ching. The proprietor is named Irving. They have matzoh ball soup on the menu.
