Lucy Goes to Scotland – I Love Lucy season 5, originally aired February 20, 1956
Lucy Goes to Scotland is actually one of my favorite I Love Lucy episodes, for several reasons. First, it’s a rare ‘dream’ episode, allowing the cast to step (slightly) out of character. Second, it’s a musical romantic comedy, giving Lucy and Desi a little more chance to strut their stuff than normal. And, it allows William Frawley and Vivian Vance to be a little more ‘out there’ in their comedy, as the two-headed dragon. Dragon? Read on …
Lucy dreams of Scotland … and a dragon
As part of their European tour, Lucy gets it into her head that she wants to visit Scotland, and see a distant cousin. Ricky makes the mistake of belittling her Scottish heritage, leading to hurt feelings between herself and Ricky. Lucy falls asleep and dreams that she is visiting her ancestral home in Kildoonan, Scotland, and it quickly becomes apparent that she’s dreaming. All of the villages’ inhabitants are living in fear of the two-headed dragon that terrorizes the village. The dragon feeds on McGillicuddys, and the village is fresh out … until Lucy McGillicuddy Ricardo has arrived.
A young inhabitant of the village, Scotty McCardo (the only Cuban Scotsman) is given the job of guarding Lucy, only to fall in love with her. He goes with her to the cave of the two-headed dragon, played by Fred and Ethel in a funny, cheesy dragon costume. Will Scotty rescue Lucy? Nope! He loses his nerve at the last moment and pushes Lucy towards the dragon. At that moment Lucy wakes up, sees the sleeping Ricky in the next bed, and hits him with a pillow for what “he” did! A very funny episode, well worth watching.
Lucy Goes to Scotland is available as part of the I Love Lucy season 5 DVD collection.

Funny quotes from Lucy Goes to Scotland – I Love Lucy
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): I have never seen anything like this before.
Fred Mertz (William Frawley): Really? When I was a kid they had toy dragons.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): When you were a kid they had real dragons.
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): [laughing] Angus McGillicuddy!
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): What’s so funny about Angus McGillicuddy?
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Nothing. I know a hundred of them! [laughs]
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): You’re one to talk! Your great-grandfather was probably Enchilada Ricardo.
Mayor Fatten her up, she’s a wee bit bony.
Townsperson: Come along, me bony lassie.
Mayor Hold your britches.
Scotty/Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): What britches?
Mayor The ones you’re wearing under your kilts.
Scotty/Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): You’re supposed to wear britches?
Mayor: She’s in the Inn, and dinnae let her out!
Scotty/Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): I’m Scotty Mactavish MacDougal McCardo.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): You’re Scottish?
Scotty/Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Aye. My great-grandfather sailed over with the Spanish Armada. Perhaps you’ve heard of him – Enchilada Ricardo.
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Kith and kin we’ll never be.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): So kiss me while you kin!
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Why does it always have to be a McGillicuddy the dragon eats?
Scotty/Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): That’s life, lassie, nature’s way. Cats eat mice. Dogs eat bones. Cows eat grass and dragons eat McGillicuddys.
Fred Dragon (William Frawley): Fee fie foe fuddy, I smell the blood of a McGillicuddy.
Scotty/Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Why do you always have to eat a McGillicuddy? Eat me!
Ethel the Dragon (Vivian Vance): We couldn’t do that.
Scotty/Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Why not?
Ethel the Dragon (Vivian Vance): Spanish food gives us heartburn.
Fred the Dragon (William Frawley) [Whistles at Lucy]
Ethel The Dragon (Vivian Vance): What are you whistling at?
Fred the Dragon (William Frawley) Look at those drumsticks!
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Take this handkerchief from me, and this LP [hands Ricky a record]
Scotty/Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): [looks at record] Xavier Cugat? [throws record away]
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Well! My hero! You just said for your bonnie honey Lucy you’d lay you down and die.
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): No, I said I’d lay me doon and dee.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Well, that’s what doon and dee means!
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Are you kidding me?!
