Police is an Essanay silent comedy starring Charlie Chaplin, as Charlie – convict 999.  The film begins with him being released from prison and given $5.00 (a large sum at the time).  No sooner is he out, however, then a bogus parson tries to convince him to “go straight”.  Reading Bible passages brings him to the point of tears.  While Charlie wipes his tears on the man’s long beard, the bogus parson picks his pocket of the money. Charlie Chaplin‘s  A Dog’s Life is one of his funniest short films, with a lot of heart as well. It begins with Charlie the Little Tramp living a vagabond life in an abandoned lot, playing “hide and seek” with a police officer.   This is one of the funniest moments in the film, which has to be seen to be appreciated. He goes to the unemployment office to look for a job.  Another hilarious slapstick bit as little Charlie gets bounced from one row of applicants to another by the larger applicants, who proceed to take all of the job opportunities. Disappointed, Charlie returns to his “home” and rescues his dog, Scraps, from other mongrels. (more…)

Synopsis of Charlie Chaplin’s The Kid:

Buy from Amazon.comThe Kid was Charlie Chaplin’s first full-length movie. It, more than anything else to that date, made Chaplin a living legend. It took over a year to produce, and was an incredible success for Chaplin. The opening title reads: “A comedy with a smile — and perhaps a tear“. As a woman (Edna Purviance) leaves a charity hospital with a newborn, and passes a church wedding.  She leaves her baby with a pleading note in a limousine and goes off to commit suicide. She turns from suicide at the last moment to return to her child, only to find him missing.  The limo had been stolen by thieves who dumped the baby by a garbage can.  Charlie the Tramp finds the baby and, after failing to pass the child on to someone more suitable, raises the child himself.
