I first saw this on the original TV series of the Odd Couple, where Roy Clark was a guest star … with a penchant for practical jokes. Felix is getting quite fed up with him, until Roy suggests pulling a prank on Felix’ roommate, Oscar — with a rubber hot dog.
Felix puts a rubber hot dog in a bun and calls Oscar to lunch. Oscar comes, sits down ate the table, and takes a bite … and keeps eating!
It’s an excellent idea for a clown skit, with the standard “that was terrible! let’s do it to someone else!” — have one clown show to the audience a “rubber” hot dog, put it in a bun, and prank a 2nd clown into taking a bite; the 2nd clown becomes outraged and indignant, until the 1st clown suggests that he pull the prank on someone else, at which point the 1st clown walks off stage.
At this point, either a 3rd clown (or the 1st clown in a transparent disguise) walks by, and the 2nd clown tries to pull the same prank — only for the new clown to simply eat it without a complaint, possibly asking for ketchup or some other condiment.
The skit would then end with either the 2nd clown marching off stage in a huff (or in a minute and a huff — apologies to Groucho Marx) or with the 2nd clown angrily chasing the (innocent) new clown off stage for spoiling his joke, possibly ending with the bucket of confetti routine.
