Speaking God’s language – A clown skit for two speaking clowns – did you ever notice that we tend to make prayer more difficult than it should be?

Clown 1: (as Clown 2 walks on stage) Hail and well met, fellow Thespian! How art thou?

Clown 2: (bewildered) Say what?

Clown 1: How art thou?

Clown 2: (slightly irritated) I’m not Art! I’m Clown 2!

Clown 1: Nay! Knowest thou not the Queen’s English?

Clown 2: I’d heard that she was, yes.  What’s this about?

Clown 1: (looking around, talking confidentially) I’m practicing for when I pray to God! Every knows that God speaks in ‘Thee’s and ‘Thou’s

Clown 2: Well, not everybody …

Clown 1: But … that’s how God speaks! It’s all throughout the Bible! So in truth, I doth need to speaketh thus!

Clown 2: But that’s translated to English. In the Bible, God originally spoke in Hebrew …

Clown 1: So I have to learn Hebrew! [picks up big, heavy book]

Clown 2: And Greek …

Clown 1: [picks up another big, heavy book] and … Greek!

Clown 2: And Aramaic, of course …

Clown 1: [picking up a third heavy book, starting to wobble under the strain] Of course!

Clown 2: [looking at clown 1] But of course, you don’t need to do that!

Clown 1: [relieved, putting down the books] Whew! I don’t?

Clown 2: Nope! God says in the Bible, “Draw near to Me, and I will draw near to you.”

Clown 1: [about to run off] Great! All I need to do is learn to draw! [exits excitedly]

Clown 2: No, wait … [leaves after Clown 1] … that’s not what it means!

A good time for a children’s pastor, etc. to come on stage and explain what it means to draw near to God.

Possible extension, or even running gag — have Clown 1 come on stage, carrying an easel and paints, wearing a painter’s smock and hat. “Easel come, easel go!” and is being chased by Clown 2, “That’s not what I meant!”
