Lucy’s Second Honeymoon – I Love Lucy season 5
On the ocean liner to Europe, Lucy is planning on a Second Honeymoon. As part of I Love Lucy‘s European Tour story arc, the Ricardos and the Mertzes are traveling on an ocean liner on their way to Europe. On the way there, Lucy is hoping to have a second honeymoon with Ricky — but for Ricky, the trip is all work, leaving him little time for anything else.
To make Lucy feel even worse, it seems that everyone else on board the ship is becoming romantic — even the normally feuding Fred and Ethel are turning into love birds!
Lucy tries to sign up for the various ship activities (ping pong, shuffleboard, etc.) — but the fact that everyone is paired up as couples only accentuates her loneliness. Sitting in a deck chair, she tries to stir up a conversation with a potential partner for the games, until his wife comes by to take him to their games. The activity director does manage to find a partner for her, however — a young boy named Kenny.
Later, Lucy gets three whole minutes with Ricky before he has to go off to his next performance, and tells him about how she and young Kenny — and Ricky misunderstands, thinking that he has a rival until the young man shows up at their door. At the dance, Lucy is dancing with Kenny. She tries to steal a moment with Ricky, but he’s called off to work, and won’t be done until 2:30 in the morning — and Lucy promises to wait for him on the promenade deck, where she’s surrounded by lovebirds until he shows up.
Ricky is too tired to dance, and Lucy is romantic — while Ricky is exhausted, leading to him falling asleep while looking at the “romantic” moon with Lucy. Afterward, Lucy asks Ethel for “one simple little thing” — kidnapping Ricky! It turns out that Ricky has arranged to have the whole night off! Lucy goes to the porthole to warn Ethel that the kidnapping is off — and gets stuck in the porthole! Ricky tries pulling her in, while Fred and Ethel push …
Ricky serenades Lucy … and the camera pulls back, showing the audience that she’s still stuck in the porthole, with workers on the inside of the room trying to get her out … with an acetylene torch!
Funny quotes from Lucy’s Second Honeymoon – I Love Lucy
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): I can’t afford to offend you.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): That’s all right. I can’t afford to be offended.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): I can just see the two of you after a couple days at sea, standing at the rail in the moonlight and you’ll be holding his hand.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): If we’re standing by the rail, I’ll be holding his head. Or he’ll be maneuvering to throw me overboard.
Fred Mertz (William Frawley): Now, Ethel, this could be a second honeymoon — so don’t louse it up!
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): The love bug has bitten my Freddie.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): The love bug? I thought Fred had been vaccinated for that.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): Oh boy. If the sea air affects him like this, when we get back to New York, I’m going to sell the apartment building and buy a houseboat.
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): Honey, I’d love to dance with you, but I’ve been standing on my feet all day long.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Of course you have, dear. Do you want to take off your shoes?
Ricky Ricardo (Desi Arnaz): I’d like to take off my feet.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Let’s face it, I’m a seagoing sorehead.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): [to dog] I always knew you were my best friend, but I didn’t know you’d be my only one.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Ethel, what’s the name of this boat?
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): The SS Constitution, why?
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): From the way everyone’s paired up I thought maybe it was the SS Noah’s Ark.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Some second honeymoon. I’m not even going to see my husband for five days.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): Can’t you ping one little pong?
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): Just what you always wanted on your second honeymoon – a chaperone.
Ethel Mertz (Vivian Vance): Tiger’s waiting for me on the upper deck — I don’t want to keep him waiting.
Lucy Ricardo (Lucille Ball): You’ve been waiting 25 years, you can wait a few minutes more!
